Tihany is the only peninsula of Lake Balaton,the whole peninsula is a historical district.King András I built here the burial-place of his family in 1055,and the chapel where Benedictine monks had been settled by him.The Abbey's two towers have been symbols of the peninsula since 1752.The founding charter of this abbey is the first extant record of Hungarian language.The fortress transformed into a castle during the Turkish wars had never been taken by the enemy.Tihany is famous for the echo in its church,existing since the XVIII century.The highest point of the peninsula is Csúcs hill which is the residue of geyser rushed up from basalt tuff.Lóczy educational path leads the visitors around the peninsula, nice, pleasant promenade with route signs guiding tourists to the sights of Tihany.
